Deer Hunting Season in Kentucky

Uncategorized Dec 08, 2024

Deer hunting got my attention in 2013.

I ran a vegetable farm business & was committed to self-sufficiency and local food procurement. But, I was a tenant farmer. I wasn't going to invest in infrastructure for livestock as a renter. So hunting came into view.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources offered a 3-part deer hunting workshop that year and I took it. Later, I took the Turkey hunting workshops. So much wisdom among participants.
I watched the how-to "field-dressing" DVD 1000 times and took notes.πŸ˜… I didn't know any hunters at the time.
My first hunt was on my dad's property by his burn pile. I built a ground blind out of a wooden pallet.
When approached by a large doe I got "buck fever". My heart rate shot up, my breath trembled, my hands shook, and I missed the shot. It was AWESOME.
I'm lucky I missed too. I would've struggled to complete the processing on my own!
Fast forward - every fall I look forward to this tradition. Luckily, my skills have developed thanks to SO many hunters who wish to pass on the skills and joy of hunting.
Since then, I've been out with family, friends, and near strangers. We all pull together for "the hunt".
Skills: Marksmanship; discipline; the endurance to sit quietly for hours in cold temps; to take a life, honor it, and field-dress, skin, and debone a large animal.
The most natural way to feed your family.
Hunting season has a lot of moving parts; coordination, and cooperation.
Private landowners granting access to hunters.
Weapon-sharing. Demonstrating patience and dedication with a new hunter. Sitting in the snow for hours. Inviting folks to your home overnight. Neighbors showing up to carve meat or help pull one out of the woods.
I'm so grateful. Personal goals don't always happen in isolation.
This year, I got the privilege of hunting with another girl. The first time in 10 years that I've actually hunted with a female. Two girls actually. An 8 and a 9 year old. What a privilege.
Passing this tradition onto the younger generations is important to herd/population management.
It's important for self-sufficiency and for self-confidence.

Thank you for everyone who has helped me on this journey! Your contribution matters!
